Stream fishing in the Laurel Highlands

If you enjoy a fly-rod challenge, try our neighborhood for stream fishing. Just about 4 minutes’ walk from the cottage, Furnace Run is at the end of our street and is one of the few Class A trout streams in Westmoreland county.

Considered the best of the state’s naturally reproducing, self-sustaining trout fisheries, Class A wild trout streams are managed as a renewable natural resource solely for the perpetuation of the wild trout fishery. Licensed fishing is permitted with all-tackle regulations but there’s no stocking, and restrictions are placed on all land and water impacts within the Class A stream’s upstream watershed.

Other Popular Local Streams close to the cottage:

Linn Run, which flows through Linn Run State Park, one of the State Parks in Pennsylvania, provides anglers with opportunities to go Trout Fishing in the vicinity of some other fantastic activities like Hiking Pennsylvania, Canoeing in PA, Kayaking in Pennsylvania, Snowmobiling in PA, and Cross Country Skiing in PA.

Loyalhanna Creek

Pennsylvania Fishing Regulations and Licenses

The PA Fish and Boat Commission determines which streams qualify as special trout streams. Most trout waters are open all year, except from March until Opening Day, (April 12, 2014). Specially designated trout streams are open to trout fishing year-round provided special tackle and trout possession restrictions are observed. For details, see the Regulations section of the Fish and Boat Commission’s website, www.fish.state.pa.us.

One, three, and seven-day tourist fishing licenses are available on-line, at all Wal-Mart stores, and many fly shops. Tourist fishing licenses include trout fishing privileges. Annual fishing licenses require a separate Trout-Salmon permit.
